WhatsApp is a popular messaging app used by billions of people around the world. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, but it’s important to be aware of your privacy settings. Here are five important WhatsApp settings that everyone should change:
1. Two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your WhatsApp account. When 2FA is enabled, you’ll need to enter a six-digit code from your phone in addition to your password when logging in. This makes it much more difficult for someone to hack into your account, even if they have your password.
To enable 2FA on WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Two-step verification. Tap Enable and follow the instructions to set up your 2FA code.
2. Last seen
Your last seen status shows when you were last active on WhatsApp. Anyone can see your last seen status by default, but you can change this setting to only show it to your contacts, or to no one at all.
To change your last seen status, go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Last seen. You can choose from the following options:
- Everyone: Anyone can see your last seen status.
- My contacts: Only your contacts can see your last seen status.
- Nobody: No one can see your last seen status.
3. Profile photo
Your profile photo is the first thing people see when they message you on WhatsApp. You can choose to make your profile photo visible to everyone, your contacts, or no one at all.
To change your profile photo visibility, go to Settings > Account > Privacy > Profile photo. You can choose from the following options:
- Everyone: Anyone can see your profile photo.
- My contacts: Only your contacts can see your profile photo.
- Nobody: No one can see your profile photo.
4. Message previews
Message previews show a small snippet of your incoming messages on your lock screen and in notification pop-ups. This can be convenient, but it can also be a privacy risk if you’re worried about someone else seeing your messages.
To disable message previews, go to Settings > Notifications > Messages. Tap Show preview and toggle it to Off.
5. Group notifications
Group chats can be great for staying in touch with multiple people at once, but they can also be very noisy. If you’re getting bombarded with notifications from group chats, you can mute them for a certain period of time or even permanently.
To mute a group chat, go to the chat and tap the group name at the top. Tap Mute notifications and choose how long you want to mute the chat for. To unmute the chat, simply go back to the group settings and tap Unmute notifications.
By changing these settings, you can improve your privacy and security on WhatsApp. It’s a good idea to review your settings regularly to make sure that they’re still meeting your needs.
